Monocle - Breaking the ice

ByRobert Bound PhotographyIvar Kvaal In Norway’s remote Lofoten archipelago, residents of a once-sleepy fishing village are weathering the Arctic chill with warm hospitality in serene surrounds. If you’re on holiday in Nusfjord, you’ll likely have come far. You’ll probably have changed planes in Oslo, boarded another in Bodø and ended up careening over the crags of Norway’s northwestern coast in your little Dash 8 turboprop, where the dark islands look like whales breaching in the brine. Then you’ll have dipped a wing toward the Lofoten archipelago, where the bays are turquoise and the summer grass is green. You’re in the cock’s comb, almost at the top of mainland Norway and well into the Arctic Circle, to find Nusfjord: a beautiful nook in the world’s second-longest coastline (Norway is still some 100,000 kilometres behind the weathersome cliffs of Canada). This neck of the Nordic woods and its latitudinal brethren are hot because they’re cool: as southern Europe’s sizzle has turned to crackle, eyes are looking northward for a calmer balm and some old-fashioned weather. So, if you’re here and you don’t speak much Norwegian, you’ll likely have come far. Phew, you have arrived.

Financial Times; Nusfjord is one of four places to get away from it all

Time to head north: Nusfjord, strung along the far-west edge of Lofoten archipelago, high up in the Arctic Circle, is a clutch of fisherman’s cabins – 25 of them, on 26,000 acres – that were recently given a complete overhaul of the highest hygge order: wood-panelled walls, down-swathed beds, simple painted furniture, rough timber ceilings, a few enormous bathtubs set next to picture windows with Valhalla-esque views.

Last autumn, news broke that The Vandelay restaurant, located at the heart of Bjørvika, was closing its doors. Trying Oslo's best dish at Betong in Bjørvika

About Oslo’s best dish, the jury writes: Sometimes you get dishes that stick with you for a long time. That’s our experience with Betong’s curry dish. Raw shrimp and balls of sweet rutabaga and cucumber in a sauce made from peri-peri, fish sauce, coconut milk, syrup, and lime juice, topped with crispy fried shallots. This is the recipe for the best dish of the year. YUM! Or to use the critic’s own words: “A delightful dish. A real winner. I could have eaten five of these.”

This is Oslo's best newcomer

A whole bunch of new restaurants opened in Oslo this year. Seven of them are truly great, but Varemottaket is the best. Newcomer of the year! Yes, nobody can match Varemottaket. Here, you can get impeccable food in informal surroundings, good service, and a bill that isn’t too steep. In the backrooms of Annies Pølsemakeri in Bjørvika is this pearl, operated by expert chefs Halaigh Whelan-McManus and Peder Støylen. A ten-course meal for NOK 1195 is supplemented by loud music, a cool playlist, and an excellent atmosphere. Do we have anything negative to say about this spot? Yes, it’s almost impossible to get a table. But hang in there, it’ll be your turn soon enough!

Ingrid Vik Lysne states that they will use this arena as a kind of lab to test out concepts, solutions, and products that they’ve been wanting to test on the market. Oslobukta was selected because it’s an exciting area that has collected a huge number of small, interesting entrepreneurs in one place. Oslobukta has gathered quality together in one place, and we’re very proud to be part of that team. We’re looking forward to benefiting from each other and working together, says Skavlan. Skavlan goes on to explain that Oslobukta is developing into a destination that is easy to access.
